As stated by Google, a Google Profile is simply how you present yourself on Google products to other Google users. In other words, it’s an informational profile that allows you to share a little bit about yourself and control how you appear on Google. Why is this important? It’s the basis and foundation for your personal brand on the biggest search engine known to man, Google. Have you ever Googled your name? If you haven’t, do it, and see what shows up, you may be surprised. These findings are directly representing you, your name, and your brand to businesses, employers, and anyone who wants to know a little bit more about you. So why not make this information speak to more about you and what you’re all about. That is why I recommend getting yourself a Google Profile. Do it, don’t be shy. Even if you don’t use Google for your email account, create yourself a Google Profile, trust me, it’s worth.
Start by creating yourself a Google Account. Use your current email address as the log-in if your wish, as I did, or create your own specific username. If you need an email account or are looking for a new email account, here’s a great opportunity for you make yourself at home. Start with the basics when creating your profile. Adding your personal information like your name, nickname, and current residence, are all important, as well as adding your professional career information. Listing current and previous employers is valuable notation as well as documenting your schooling. Education is important and more of a required qualification for many professional positions. Doesn’t hurt to add a little personality to your profile. Create a short bio about yourself telling your profile viewers who you are, what your about, and what makes you tick. This section is important because it describes you. If you had to describe yourself in a nutshell, what would you say? Use this section to paint a picture about yourself. These links are your greatest marketing tool. The more links out of your profile, creates the opportunity for your viewers to learn more about you as well as ups your personal search content on Google. I recommend attaching links of your Social Sites like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, as well as creating links to your Blog and Professional Online Resume. Use these links wisely. Only create and promote those links that you feel best represent you and your goals.
Before completing your profile, create your personal url and add your contact information. At the end of your Google Profile link you have the opportunity to personalize your profile url with a unique name. This unique name not only tags your profile to you, but it makes it easier for people to find you. Choose a name that best represents you. It’s important to note that this name will be used in other links to your content on Google. I recommend either using your full name, business name, or your professional alias. Once you set it, you can forget it, because you won’t have the opportunity to change this. You’ll be stuck with it FOREVER. Also, add your personal or professional contact information to your profile. Include your email, phone, address, and other pertinent information for people to reach out and contact you. You can share your contact info or control who sees it by creating groups. Groups can include contacts such as friends, family, and coworkers. Privacy is important so only share what you wish with people who you trust.
